How was wool processed for filling mattresses and pillows?
The wool made up of short fibres and intended for filling mattresses and pillows was worked with the carder, a tool whose purpose is to make it airy (into wads). Once filled, the mattresses and pillows often, with continuous use, lost their shape and comfort and it was therefore the task of the mattress makers to unstitch the linings and card the crushed wool again.
