Unlike horses, cattle were shod occasionally, mainly oxen used to pull carts and ploughs or if they had to travel long distances. The purpose of shoeing the hooves of oxen was to protect them during difficult stretches of road and to improve the animal's grip on the ground. In some situations, such as in winter, crampons could be attached to the shoes.
