Was the plow used in Ticino?
In Ticino, the use of the plow was limited by the characteristics of the territory, mainly in flat and extensive areas. The division of the land between different properties led in some areas to the adoption of a collective approach, where the plow was used to work on an entire section of countryside, subsequently divided into the lots of each owner. In Mendrisiotto, the plow was particularly used to prepare the land for tobacco cultivation. The types of plow used in Ticino were different, the oldest was with a fixed moldboard, which always overturned the earth on the same side, resulting in an inconvenience for reversing the direction. Later, the "voltorecchio" plow was introduced, with mobile plowshare and moldboard, simplifying the change of direction during plowing. Other types of plough included the "perticara", characterised by a stock and hold made from a single piece of wood, and the "rincalzatore", used to ridge the earth around potatoes, corn and tobacco, equipped with a mouldboard and sole.
