When and how do mating and egg-laying occur?
Mating occurs shortly after the silkworm transforms into a butterfly: the spermatozoa from the male organs are deposited in the so-called female copulatory pouch, coming into contact with the eggs. Fertilization occurs in 20-30 minutes, while the entire mating process can take 2-3 hours.
The laying of eggs, one by one, takes place from a few moments to 4-5 hours after mating. One laying gives from 300 to 700 eggs.
