What is the silkworm farm and what was its function?

The silkworm farm is a system of frames or drawers, with a bottom made of strips, one on top of the other, used to raise silkworms during their development. The frames on which the silkworms were placed were lined with layers of perforated paper, which ensured better cleaning. When the silkworm was ready to spin the cocoon, the so-called "bosco", a bundle of branches or shrubs that provided a suitable support for spinning the cocoon, was placed on the frames. The silkworm farm was placed inside a room (which could also take the name of silkworm farm itself, bigatèra in dialect), if possible high, healthy, well heated (at about 21°C) and well protected from drafts; sometimes it was even placed in the kitchen. Both the temperature and the hygiene of the rooms and the tools used were of fundamental importance to avoid the development of diseases.
